Student Support

The first and most important contact person for students and parents is the student’s Teacher. General queries, notes to explain absences and matters of student welfare should be raised with the Teacher in the first instance. Parents can contact the Teacher by note, by email, or by leaving a phone message at the School Office.

Student Support Team

Student Support at Nixon St Primary School is a team of professional and dedicated staff consisting of:

  • Student Support Teacher - Ms Vicki Nowell
  • Social Worker - Ms Libby Beyerle
  • School Psychologist - Mrs Lucy Karafilis
  • School Chaplain - Mr Nathan Scott
  • School Nurse - Ms Kerry Jewell

The team specialises in helping students with their physical, intellectual, emotional and social wellbeing.

Students and families are welcome to seek the support of any member of the team to assist in a variety of issues to ensure that students have support, understanding and direction, please ask at the School Office. The Student Support Team can also refer to outside agencies should more specific assistance be required.

Student Support Teacher

Our Student Support Teacher works collaboratively with classroom teachers, teacher assistants and other relevant support providers to plan for students using differentiated curriculum, personalised learning environments and assistive technologies, within the framework of the Australian Curriculum. They work in regular consultation with specialist support staff, parents, school staff and other relevant service providers to develop, implement and evaluate Learning Plans (LPs) within inclusive teaching and learning programs. They provide 'at the shoulder' support within some classrooms and run small targeted learning groups.

School Psychologist and Social Worker

Our school has a qualified Social Worker and School Psychologist who are available to support students through counselling and assessment.

The School Psychologist deals with concerns about learning difficulties, social issues and emotional problems. The Social Worker provides counselling for students and families, supports students and families through a wide range of social issues and problems and is able to provide support in such cases.

Referrals are usually made by the Student Support Teacher or an Assistant Principal after consultation with parents by making an appointment through the School Office.

School Nurse

Our school has a School Health Nurse who supports our school to create a physical and social environment that promotes health and wellbeing, and assists to improve the health and education outcomes for our students. All Kinder age students will see the school nurse. If you wish your child to see the nurse please ask for a referral at the School Office
